How to shoot real estate

In this introduction to real estate photography we’ll cover the three basic photographic skills you need to master to deliver quality real estate photography:

Blending multiple images in Photoshop

Here’s a short video where I walk you through the task of blending different exposures together.

This can be a very quick and easy way to light up different areas that require different exposures, and so I’ll show you how we blend those images using layer masks in Photoshop.

Sky replacement in Photoshop

There are a lot of different ways to do a sky replacement in Photoshop, and if you already have a method that works then I’d encourage you to stick with that.

However, if this is something new for you then you might find this quick and simple method for a sky replacement helpful.

A sky replacement using Photoshop CC’s Select & Mask

Here’s another way to do a sky replacement for your real estate photos. This technique only works with Photoshop CC, and it uses the Select & Mask tool:

Pricing for Real Estate Photography

In the video below I talk about some of the biggest issues associated with pricing for real estate photography. We’ll cover:

  • Four reasons not to compete on price
  • The difference even a small price rise can make to your profit margin
  • Why it’s important that you know your numbers
  • How to calculate your fees so you know what you should be charging (and not just copying other photographers in your area)
  • How to manage a price increase
  • And whether you should, or should not, include your pricelist on your website

Marketing for Real Estate Photography

The success of your photography business will depend more on your marketing than your ability with the camera. So this is where you should be focused, and this is where you should be committing most of your time.

That’s not to say that you can get by with poor photography. Your work has to be great, so make sure your standards are high. But there are a lot of very good photographers that aren’t making any money because they haven’t been smart with their marketing.

In the video below we’ll look at:

  • What you must aim for with your marketing system, and why it matters
  • The thing that really determines how much you can charge your clients
  • 5 marketing ideas you can use
  • What you can do to make sure you keep your marketing under control with a clear plan of attack

How to get more commercial photography shoots

Do you want to be doing more photo shoots for architects, builders, hotels and more, but you’re not real sure what you should be doing to get those jobs?

In this video I lay out the areas you need to work on to give yourself a better chance at securing those high-paying commercial photo shoots.

What To Include On Your Website

In this video I review 11 real estate photographer websites, and we’re going to do that based around five criteria:

1. As a first time visitor to the site, is it clear that they do real estate photography?
2. Where are they located?
3. What’s the next step that they want the visitor to take, and is this clearly stated and easily found?
4. Will the website rank well in the search engines?
5. Is the website responsive? Does it look good on a mobile device or tablet?

Are you prepared to work hard?

In this video I’ll share a story with you about a photographer that scored a job with a dream client, and then what they did wrong …
